Sanctuary of the Madonna di Supina

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Supina, located near to Gargnano, offers a spiritual haven immersed in nature. It is reached at the end of a pleasant walk from Folino Cabiana, continuing through Cervano, and invites visitors to an experience of quiet contemplation.

Restored in 1997, the sanctuary has a façade, doorway and bell tower dating back to the 17th century, elements that blend seamlessly with the home of the hermit, dating back to the same period. Nonetheless, the oldest part of the sanctuary dates back to between1460 and 1490, giving this place a deep-rooted sense of history.

The interior of the sanctuary is an artistic masterpiece, with a nave that is completely decorated with architectural feints, mythological figures and cornices with arabesques that capture the gaze and give pause for reflection. The counter-façade, has particular designs of painted mermaids, adding a touch of mystery and ancient charm to the holy setting. The ceiling consists of 72 wooden panels, painted with tempera, which replace the original structure - probably a truss roof - while adding to the ornamental decoration of the interior.

As well as artistic beauty, the sanctuary is also known for its spiritual connotation, linked to the historical events of the place. Following a cholera epidemic in 1567, a religious oath was sworn that is still honoured today: the 25th day of each month is considered a feast day, in honour of the deep devotion of the community and its gratitude for the protection received.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Supina is open to celebrate Mass on the first Sunday of each month (the second Sunday in October and November) and on important dates such as the 25th March, Easter Monday, the 15th August, and 26th December. The times for the service vary from 4:00pm from April to September, and 3:00pm from October to March, which allow worshippers and visitors to take part in the retreats at different times in the year.

This sanctuary does not only represent an important place of worship, it is also living evidence of holy art and local history, which continues to inspire and welcome people seeking peace and spirituality in the beauty of Lake Garda’s hinterland.
