The Nonii Arrii Villa Romana, a historic jewel just a stone’s throw from Lake Garda, close to the entrance to the Toscolano paper mills, reveals the sumptuous life and importance of the Nonii family, one of the most influential in Brescia during the Roman period. This majestic residential complex, built in the first century CE, blends perfectly into the setting of the large lakeside villas of the ancient Benacus [the lake], with illustrious paragons such as the villas of Sirmione and Desenzano del Garda.
The villa was probably owned by Marcus Nonius Macrinus, consul in 154 and proconsul of Asia in 170-171, and a prominent figure in Roman society, as confirmed by an inscription unearthed in the area. This direct link between a building and its illustrious owner is unique of all Garda’s villas, making the Roman Villa of Toscolano Maderno a site of exceptional historic and archaeological value.
Covering an area of more than 15,000 square metres, the villa enjoyed a prestigious position, directly overlooking the lake, with a monumental loggia to the front and avant-corps on the northern and southern sides. Excavations have revealed different areas with geometric mosaics and frescos that imitate marble, relics from a past of undisputed luxury and elegance.
Over the centuries, the villa underwent numerous changes and transformations, with a particularly important stage in the early half of the second century CE, maintaining its link with the Nonii family. As well as remains of the residence, two ancient temples were found, one dedicated to Jupiter and the other to Bacchus, adding yet another layer of cultural and religious complexity to the site, with holy elements later transformed or replaced by Christian structures.
The Roman Villa of Toscolano Maderno is not just an archaeological treasure, it is also a place where history, culture and natural beauty come together to offer visitors a unique window on the luxury and spirituality of ancient Rome, enriched by the breathtaking scenery of Lake Garda. This historic site is an essential point of reference when it comes to understanding life on the shores of the lake during Roman times, and the heritage of one of Brescia’s most powerful families.
