The Sant’Ercolano path is a new, interesting proposal for tourists that take them through the municipality of Toscolano Maderno. This route is set out in three loops, each one with a different level of difficulty, and it touches all of the historic churches in the area, offering a unique experience both to pilgrims and trekkers alike.
Created by the municipality and managed in conjunction with the Le Vie del Benaco Association and the SantaGiulia Fine Arts Academy of Brescia, the route pays homage to St Herculanus, the patron saint of the town and once Bishop of Brescia, who is buried in the splendid Church of Sant’Andrea in Maderno. The route passes through breathtaking landscapes, from the plain to the source of the Toscolano river, through to the Lombardy prealps, crossing the charming Valle delle Cartiere and Valle delle Camerate, to arrive at the top of Mount Pizzocolo and Mount Spino.
Walkers can make use of a variety of aids: a printed guide, a web page hosted by the website of Ecomuseo Valle delle Cartiere with virtual maps and GPS routes, and visible signs along the routes. These supports are developed to guarantee a safe, informative experience, allowing everyone to enjoy the natural and historic beauty in complete tranquillity.
We recommend using the free app 112 WhereAreU, useful in guaranteeing your safety, thanks to its automatic geolocation. It is also important to remember that not all water along the route is drinkable. Water in the urban and middle sections is generally safe to drink, while in Valle delle Cartiere it is not. Excursionist who decide to take the most difficult route need to bring sufficient water, especially when the mountain refuges are not accessible.
Those who decide to go on the Sant'Ercolano walk should always check the weather conditions and the conditions of the trails before setting out, making sure that they have suitable clothing and footwear, especially on difficult sections, which in winter may have a covering of snow or ice. The medium and high difficulty routes are also suitable for MTB, offering another way to explore the magnificent countryside around Lake Garda.
The Sant’Ercolano path is an exceptional way to discover the natural and cultural marvels of Toscolano Maderno, which will leave an indelible memory of this walk in their hearts.
